Two people were taken to the hospital after an accident in a construction zone on Saturday afternoon.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said just before 5:00 p.m. a vehicle went off the roadway in the 1000 block of Melrose Road. It went into the work area and then down into a concrete hole. Deputies and Douglas County Fire District No. 2 units arrived on the scene. Both elderly occupants, ages 82 and 97, were extricated and had injuries.

The driver said she had her cruise control set at forty-five miles per hour and thought she was driving on the correct path of the roadway. Her vehicle went off the undeveloped bridge, coming to a rest on its side. Both occupants were transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
