DFPA LIGHTNING RECONNAISSANCE FRIDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE

August 4,2023 2:45 p.m.

The Douglas District received lightening activity Thursday night and early Friday and has a confirmed satellite count of sixty-six strikes ranging from Glendale, Tiller and Myrtle Creek to Glide and Steamboat.

Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association is actively engaged in lightening reconnaissance with ground and aerial resources. As of Friday afternoon, there are eight confirmed fires in the district. One fire was confirmed to be in the Thunder Mountain/Peel area and has been knocked down and is in mop-up. All other confirmed fires are in the southern half of the district, which includes the undeveloped areas of Glendale, Azalea and Tiller.

Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said at this time, all DFPA district resources are engaged, with more resources on order. Pope said current aviation resources include  three Type 2 helicopters, two single-engine air tankers and the DFPA air attack platform. Of the eight confirmed fires, the largest is one acre.

The Oneil Butte Fire near Tiller, is in steep terrain and required an extensive hike into the location. Air resources kept the fire spread to one-tenth of an acre until ground crews arrived.

Of the eight fires, four are in mop-up with the others staffed with ground resources.

Pope said all fires continue to be in remote, wildland areas with no homes or structures threatened.
