July 29, 2023  6:00 a.m.

Containment on the Flat Fire in Curry County is now at fourteen percent.

An update from Northwest Incident Management Team 3 said firefighters used firing operations to establish and strengthen control lines along Forest Road 3318, also known as Wildhorse Ridge Road, and Forest Road 3680 on Friday when wind and humidity conditions were favorable. Helicopters assisted with suppression efforts by applying retardant in northeastern and southeastern parts of the fire. Crews utilized Unstaffed Aerial Systems to ignite pockets of vegetation within control lines and identify small sources of heat across control features so they could be extinguished quickly. Rappellers finished mopping up the one hundred ten-acre spot fire southeast of Silver Peak and were extracted Friday afternoon.

Friday night firefighters planned to begin tactical firing operations east of the Illinois River along Forest Road 2308, also known as Burnt Ridge, and Forest Road 150, to stop forward progression of the main fire. Crews will continue to mop up recently burned areas and patrol for lingering heat along the northern, western and southern perimeters of the fire.

The Flat Fire is listed at 24,329 acres. 1,643 personnel are assigned to the fire.
