Cooler temperatures and higher humidity moderated fire behavior Monday on the Flat Fire, near Agness in Curry County.

An update from Northwest Incident Management Team 3 said most of the fire growth in recent days is a result of successful firing and holding operations in the southwest portion of the fire. The objective of these burnout operations is to eliminate vegetation between the wildfire and the road systems that firefighters are using as control features. Structure protection groups remain in the communities of Oak Flat and Agness. These resources are also prepared to provide support to other parts of the incident if needed.

Tuesday firefighters will continue ignitions from the Game Lake area working south along Forest Road 3680 towards Snow Camp in the southwest portion of the fire. Unstaffed Aerial Systems and helicopters will assist crews with burning operations as needed to create more depth along control lines. In the northeast, crews will continue reducing fuels along road systems including Burnt Ridge Road and Forest Road 150 in preparation for future containment efforts.
