The Flat Fire, burning near Agness in Curry County, spread on the western flank Tuesday, but remains listed at just over 8,200 acres with zero percent containment.
An update from the Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest said an infrared flight was scheduled for Tuesday night to map accurate acreage. Firefighters have been successful in keeping the fire within control lines on the northwestern section of the fire. Crews completed small, targeted ten to fifteen acre burn-outs reducing vegetation on the north flank, protecting communities in the Agness area.
Fire managers continued making use of aviation resources on Tuesday. That included helicopters and airtankers that were used to drop water and retardant over the fire.
A closure order remains in place for the fire area. That includes trails, roads and a portion of the Illinois River. Those driving in the area should expect increased fire traffic.
