A Roseburg man has died while in custody at the Douglas County Jail Wednesday morning.

A release from Lieutenant Brad O’Dell, Public Information Officer for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, said just before 7:20 a.m., a deputy discovered a male adult in custody who appeared to be unresponsive.

Deputies immediately called emergency services, who arrived and determined that 45-year-old Thomas Vorhis, was deceased.

O’Dell said Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin has requested the assistance of the Roseburg Police Department, an outside agency, to investigate the circumstances of the man’s death.

Currently there are no indications of foul play, although the investigation is ongoing.

An autopsy has been scheduled at the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office in Clackamas.

Sheriff Hanlin said in a statement, “I extend my sincere condolences to Mr. Vorhis’ loved ones. Any death that occurs in the Corrections facility is taken seriously and fully investigated. I wish to thank the Roseburg Police Department for independently investigating this death and for their careful and thoughtful review of the facts.”

No further information has been released at this time. O’Dell said any updates on the investigation will be released by the Roseburg Police Department.
