A woman was rescued from the South Umpqua River near Stanton Park in Canyonville on Tuesday afternoon.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said just after 4:20 p.m. a man called and said his daughter had gone into the river to rescue her dog, which was caught in the current. In doing so, the woman became caught in the current as well, and was swept downstream. The woman, described as being in her 30s, was able to grab onto some trees mid-river.

A rescue swimmer from the Winston-Dillard Fire District was able to reach her and hold her in place while a rescue boat from DCSO was deployed. Deputies pulled the woman from the water, about 50 minutes after going in. The woman was transported by ambulance to CHI Mercy Medical Center. Her condition was not available when the report was filed.

Multiple agencies assisted in the rescue including the Cow Creek Tribal Police, Myrtle Creek Police, Oregon State Search and Rescue Coordinator, US Coast Guard, Douglas County Fire District #2, Winston-Dillard Fire Department, Canyonville Fire Department, South County Interagency Rescue Team and Umpqua Valley Ambulance.

More information is expected in a future report.
