HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS COMPETE IN MATH COMPETITION AT UCC

April 10, 2023 3:30 a.m.

More than 70 students representing nine high schools throughout Douglas County participated in a math competition at Umpqua Community College on Thursday.

It was held at UCC’s Danny Lang Teaching, Learning and Event Center, with the mathletes wearing green UCC t-shirts.

The event started with a welcome from UCC’s Vice President of Academic Services, Teresa Rivenes, followed by a 60-minute quiz, scavenger hunt, and lunch. The campus-wide scavenger hunt involved teamwork where students had the opportunity to engage with faculty and learn about becoming a Riverhawk. Results were tabulated and a ceremony recognized the winners.

Math competition results were tabulated and followed by an awards ceremony that recognized the winners. Students competed in algebra, pre-calculus and calculus, with participants in the top 12 percent of each category qualifying to compete at the 41st Oregon Invitational Math Tournament at the University of Oregon.

Level 6 winners were state qualifier Emily Larson of Roseburg High School and Hurrsh Ministry of South Umpqua High School.
