A Roseburg teen died after his vehicle crashed into the South Umpqua River Thursday morning.

Lieutenant Brad O’Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said shortly before 8:00 a.m. dispatchers were notified of the accident near the corner of Brockway Road and Willis Creek Road near Winston.

O’Dell said deputies responded to find that a pickup had gone through a bridge railing and fallen approximately 30 feet into the river, landing on it’s top. With the assistance of swift water crews and a tow company, the vehicle was recovered. The driver, 18-year old Austin Cross, was located inside and declared to be deceased at the scene.

O’Dell said investigators determined that Cross was traveling westbound on Brockway Road when he lost control of the pickup on the icy roadway. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.

DCSO was assisted by several other agencies at the accident scene.
