AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY BEGINS WEDNESDAY FOR WIDE AREA

December 12, 2022 3:30 p.m.

An Air Stagnation Advisory begins at 4:00 a.m. Wednesday for a wide area of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said that stagnant air is expected, which may lead to deteriorating air quality.

The Advisory area includes southern and south-central parts of the state from the coast to the Idaho border.

Forecasters said air stagnation is likely to result in diminishing air quality with time, especially in and near areas with significant sources of air pollution. That is likely to cause health problems for people with respiratory problems if precautions are not taken.

A weak weather system is forecast to arrive over the weekend, which may allow for some minor mixing and reduction of air stagnation conditions.

People with respiratory illness should follow their physician’s advice for dealing with diminished air quality. N95 masks are effective at filtering out the majority of air particulates.

State air quality agencies highly recommend that no outdoor burning occur and that residential wood burning devices be limited as much as possible.

The Advisory is slated to continue through 4:00 a.m. Saturday.
