The Douglas County Board of Commissioners has announced that Lowell Ostrom was awarded the Douglas County Senior Services Volunteer of the Month Award for November.
Commissioner Tom Kress recently presented Ostrom with the award at the Bistro Sixty Reedsport Senior Dining Site. It is located inside the Lower Umpqua Senior Center.
Kress said, “Dedicated volunteers like Lowell show up day-in and day-out to meet the needs of seniors through our Meals on Wheels program. This isn’t just an activity for him, he’s made it part of his personal community. We are very grateful to have him as part of the Douglas County Senior Services family”.
Ostrom was nominated by Food Service Worker Karen Robertson.
Ostrom got involved as a volunteer 12 years ago when he was enjoying a meal at the senior center. He noticed that one of the regular volunteers was out and the dishes had started to pile up. So, he rolled up his sleeves and started clearing dishes. He has been involved ever since and currently serves as a driver.
Bistro Sixty Senior Dining Sites prepare meals on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at seven rural dining sites in Glide, Glendale, Reedsport, Riddle, Sutherlin, Winston and Yoncalla. Residents who know of someone who could benefit from the Meals on Wheels delivery service or getting meals at a senior dining site can contact Senior Services at 440-3677. Those who want to volunteer can also call the same number.
