A man is jailed on 43 charges following a weekend standoff that left a victim hospitalized.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 2500 block of Strickland Canyon Road. Lieutenant Brad O’Dell said the driver attempted to flee from law enforcement. O’Dell said the driver went out Lookinglass Road before turning onto Happy Valley Road. Spike strips were successfully deployed before the driver turned onto Rolling Hills Road.

The passenger, 48-year old Carlos Bernal, fled from the vehicle on foot and then fired at law enforcement officers. The officers returned fire.

O’Dell said Bernal entered an unsecured home in the 100 block of Bunting Court in Green. Bernal held two people as hostages as law enforcement attempted to negotiate and defuse the situation. One of the hostages was a minor, and was later able to escape on her own.

The News Review is reporting that people in the neighborhood near Bunting Court said that at least 12 gunshots were heard over the course of the hostage situation, along with yelling and police sirens.

Sunday morning shortly before 2:00 a.m. Bernal was taken into custody. The second hostage, an adult female, was found alive, but suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center for treatment.

Bernal was also transported to Mercy for treatment of a gunshot wound to his leg. Later in the day, he was booked into the Douglas County Jail on a long list of charges. Those include: attempted murder or treason, first-degree counts of assault, burglary, kidnapping, robbery and theft, being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree assault, menacing, and attempting to commit a Class A felony.

The Douglas County Major Crimes Team spent part of Sunday processing the scene.
