ELK CREEK FIRE CONTAINED AT 8 ACRES, MOP UP UNDERWAY

October 11, 2022 6:40 p.m.

The Elk Creek Fire has been contained at 8 acres.

Rachel Pope of the Douglas Forest Protective Association said mop up on the fire, near Tom Folley Road in Elkton, began on Tuesday afternoon.

Pope said crews worked aggressively on the fire throughout Monday night. It began earlier in the afternoon at around 4:00 p.m. By Tuesday morning, about 60 percent of dozer and hand dug control lines in steep terrain were complete. Tuesday crews completed trailing the left flanks and laying hose around the entire perimeter of the fire.

Mop up progress is expected to continue for several days. Pope said smoke may be visible in the area until all hotspots are contained.

Pope said DFPA would like to thank the Coos Forest Protective Association, neighboring Oregon Department of Forestry districts, contract crews and industrial resources for their quick response and assistance with all aspects of fire suppression response on the Douglas District.
