Sutherlin Police jailed a man after an investigation into an alleged burglary and theft on Thursday.

Captain Kurt Sorenson said at about 12:30 p.m. officers responded to a call regarding a burglary in progress in the area of East Comstock Avenue and East Central Avenue. Sorenson said the suspect had left the scene but through an ensuing investigation, officers began looking for a lone male driving a sedan.

Sorenson said just before 4:30 p.m. officers found the vehicle being driven in the 1100 block of West Central Avenue. The suspect fled from the vehicle on foot but was quickly located and taken into custody. It was later determined that the sedan had switched license plates and had been stolen from Eugene. The suspect was identified as 37-year old Trask Phelps. He had an active warrant for his arrest.

Phelps was taken to jail and charged with attempting to elude police on foot, resisting arrest, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, two counts of second-degree criminal trespass, third-degree counts of escape and possessing stolen property and for a parole violation. Phelps was held without bail.

Sorenson said numerous items of property located in the sedan are suspected to be stolen from other communities in the area. The investigation is ongoing. Sorenson said anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Sutherlin Police at 459-2211, or email: policerecords@ci.sutherlin.or.us.
