Two drivers were sent to the hospital after a five-vehicle pile-up on Highway 38 near Reedsport on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Oregon State Police, a 1980 Ford dump truck was heading westbound towards Reedsport around 1:15 p.m., towing a flatbed trailer with a passenger car loaded on top. The operator of the dump truck, a 65-year-old Glide man, reportedly drifted onto the shoulder of the roadway and lost control of the vehicle when trying to get back on the highway.
OSP says the trailer began to fishtail, jackknife and started tipping over. The passenger car loaded on the trailer was dislodged and impacted the passenger side of the dump truck.
Troopers say that a Ram 2500 heading eastbound was unable to avoid the out-of-control dump truck and ran head on into the driver’s side of the truck. The drivers of both trucks sustained injuries and were transported to Lower Umpqua Hospital, according to OSP.
The accident report says that the trailer also sideswiped another vehicle going east on Highway 38. The driver of that car sustained minor injuries.
In total, five vehicles had to be towed from the crash scene. The driver of the dump truck was cited for failing to drive within a lane and driving a commercial motor vehicle without a CDL.
