August 10, 2022 3:30 a.m.

On Friday, Douglas County Commissioners Tim Freeman and Tom Kress were on location in Winchester Bay for a special presentation for National Coast Guard Day and National Lighthouse Week.

A release said the commissioners recognized “…the brave men and women of our U.S. Coast Guard who protect the personal safety and security of our people…”. Commissioner Kress presented National Coast Guard Day proclamation certificates to both the U.S. Coast Guard Sector North Bend and the U.S. Coast Guard Station Umpqua River. Guests at the presentation were treated to a special “flyby” from a MH-65 Short Range Coast Guard Recovery Helicopter that was on a training mission from Sector North Bend.

The release said commissioners also recognized National Lighthouse Week. Commissioner Kress presented certificates to the staff, volunteers and foundation members that work to keep the Umpqua River Lighthouse and adjacent facilities open.
