LIGHTNING MODERATES OVER THE UMPQUA NATIONAL FOREST

August 4, 2022 2:00 p.m.

Lightning has begun to moderate over the Umpqua National Forest with no new strikes since Wednesday.

Pam Sichting of the UNF said the cooler next few days will allow firefighters the opportunity to make significant progress in containing and mopping up existing fires. Sichting said a drying and warming trend will begin at the end of the week headed into triple digit temperatures once again. It is anticipated holdover strikes or sleeper fires will pop-up from previous lightning strikes.

Sichting said five additional new starts were reported Wednesday for a total of 25 fires that have been detected on the Umpqua National Forest since July 30th. The largest is the Windigo Fire, being managed by Northwest Incident Management Team 6.

Of the remaining fire starts being managed by Umpqua National Forest resources:

*12 have been fully contained

*4 have been controlled and are in patrol status

*2 have been called out

*The Forebay One fire is 3 acres and 100 percent contained

*Dorothy Creek fire is 2 acres and 50 percent contained

*Fire #269 fire is 3 acres

*All remaining starts are less than 1 acre.

Parts of Forest Service roads 60 and 2610 are closed due to the fires. A number of forest trails are closed as well.
