Students from Umpqua Community College won Best Community College at the 7th Annual InventOR competition.

The event is the state’s only college-level prototyping competition that empowers students to be innovators and take their ideas from the conceptual stage into reality.

The goal of the competition, which was held late last month, is to create new technologies and resources that serve the community.

Twenty teams competed, with inventions ranging from fashion items to medical devices.

Each team presented their work to the judges at the event, and the team of 4 UCC students waked away with 1st place in their category.

The team presented a product to maximize the production of sustainable food using artificial intelligence with an invention that uses sensors to measure atmospheric data, which is then stored in a system that customers can access either from their phones or computers.

The team won $1,500 for their efforts and is made up of teammates Marie Smith, Devin Black, Jacob Hastings, and Hector Cardenas.

This was the school’s first time participating in the Annual InventOR competition.
