FOREST OFFICIALS ASK RESIDENTS TO LEAVE FIREWORKS AT HOME

June 30, 2022 3:30 a.m.

With the July 4th weekend approaching, forest officials are asking residents to leave fireworks and exploding targets at home.

Chris Bentley of the Umpqua National Forest said possessing, discharging, or using any kind of firework or other pyrotechnic device on public lands is prohibited year-round. Bentley said doing so could lead to a $5,000 fine and a possible six months in jail. Bentley said anyone who causes a wildfire using fireworks or other incendiaries may be held responsible for any suppression costs. Forest visitors are encouraged to enjoy local public firework displays offered in several communities

A release said while there are no current campfire restrictions in the Umpqua National Forest, campers are encouraged to think carefully about their need for a fire and to use a propane stove or other cooking devices whenever possible. Fires should never be left unattended. They should be extinguished completely which means that coals are cold to the touch.

Bentley said for those heading out to the woods for the holiday, space is available in many campgrounds offering first come first serve campsites. Camp sites can be reserved at: www.recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777.

Forest Service offices will be closed Saturday through Monday, so those needing assistance in getting maps, permits or other visitor information services should do so in advance.
