Gary Leif Navigation Center to Hold Ribbon Cutting Next Week

6/15/2022 1:00 p.m.

The City of Roseburg and the United Community Action Network are inviting the public to celebrate the opening of the Gary Leif Navigation Center next week.

The ribbon-cutting and plaque-dedication for the center begins at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, June 23rd at 948 Southeast Mill Street in Roseburg.

An informational release from the City said Carol Leif, the widow of the late State Representative Gary Leif, will be in attendance to accept a plaque honoring her late husband’s effort to fund the City-owned emergency shelter and navigation center.

UCAN will be the operating agency at the center, offering multi-agency service and provider partners that will provide on-site, wraparound services.

Brief remarks will be made by Roseburg Mayor Larry Rich, UCAN Executive Director Shaun Pritchard, and Oregon Housing Stability Councilmember Gerard Sandoval

In March the Roseburg City Council voted to name the shelter after Leif, who was instrumental in getting $1.5 million in state funding for the facility before he passed away on July 22nd, 2021.

The City and UCAN are on track to open Roseburg’s first emergency shelter and navigation center by June 30th, enabling the City to keep $1.5 million in state funding as well as apply for an additional $1 million to support the facility.

In addition, Umpqua Health Alliance has provided the City two grants for the center totaling $300,000.

The center’s Phase 1 opening includes 10 pallet shelters with a shower trailer, laundry services, and case management services to help unhoused persons become more self-sufficient.

Phase 2 of the center’s opening will involve renovating the building to allow room for up to 30 shelter beds.
