As part of a statewide effort to improve facilities for people with disabilities, a new Oregon Department of Transportation project will replace more than 150 sidewalk wheelchair ramps in five southern Oregon communities this year.

Dan Latham of ODOT said a total of 33 separate intersections are involved, mostly along Oregon 38 and U.S. 101. Projects include:

*In Drain, six intersections and 34 ramps

*In Elkton, seven intersection and 34 ramps

*In Gardiner, four intersections and 14 ramps

*In Reedsport, twelve intersections and 60 ramps

*In Bandon, four intersections and 15 ramps

Latham said construction will extend until December. Each sidewalk ramp will usually need a couple of weeks for construction. Motorists can expect intermittent lane and shoulder closures. When sidewalks and ramps are closed, ODOT will identify and sign alternate routes for pedestrians.

Latham said work hours depend on the amount of work at each intersection. Areas with higher traffic volumes may require nighttime work. ODOT will work with local businesses during construction.

The release said the $4.2 million project will be constructed by Brown Contracting of Eugene and will bring each sidewalk ramp into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
