CITY EXTENDS CHARTER REVIEW COMMITTEE APPLICATION PERIOD

May 12, 2022 4:10 a.m.

The City of Roseburg is extending the application period for a new, limited-duration Roseburg City Charter Review Committee, which will work to help update the current City Charter.

A release said the deadline to apply is 5:00 p.m. on Friday June 3rd. Three citizen committee members are needed. Candidates must live in Roseburg. Three city councilors have already been appointed to the committee: Bob Cotterell, Sheri Moothart and Andrea Zielinski.

The special limited-duration committee is expected to meet for about six months starting Wednesday June 22nd to update a charter established in 1982.

The release said the committee will work with city staff and the city attorney to review and propose amendments to language or sections of the document. The committee will be reviewing the authority and responsibilities of the mayor, council, city manager and municipal judge; examining the ordinance adoption-process; evaluating the terms of office and the qualifications for the mayor and the council, and considering other government responsibilities.

The committee reports to the city council, which must approve amendments or changes to the charter before Roseburg voters are asked to weigh in on a proposal in a Special District Election in May 2023.
