SPRINGTIME SAFETY TIPS FOR OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

Warmer weeks of early spring bring unique health risks and possible natural resource damage.

Chris Bentley of the Umpqua National Forest is offering a few simple tips to ensure that springtime adventures are safe for families, as well as for public lands.

*Recreating through muddy trails is not much fun, but packing down loose mud on trails can actually damage the trail and bring other possible resource damage. To help avoid compaction and erosion, residents should stay on designated trails and avoid hiking, biking or using off-highway vehicles through mud whenever possible

*Rapid weather changes can be life threatening when out in the woods. People outdoors should be prepared for weather fluctuations by having multiple layers and clothing that won’t stay wet. Wear sturdy shoes and pack extra clothing, food and other supplies including a first aid kit and water.

*Many Forest Service roads are not plowed in the winter which means they may not be passable by vehicles until late spring or even summer. Those planning to drive in the forest should check the Forest Service website or call the district office for road and recreation site updates.

*During the spring, rivers run high, fast and very cold. Avoid fast moving water as much as possible when hiking.
