HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS COMPETE AT UCC FOR OREGON STATE MATH INVITATIONAL

April 1, 2022 4:20 a.m.

More than sixty students representing seven high schools throughout Douglas County participated in a math competition Thursday at Umpqua Community College.

Communications Director Suzi Pritchard said the top placing participants qualified for the Oregon Invitational Math Tournament at Oregon State University. Pritchard said the event is set to resume in May, following a two-year pandemic hiatus.

Held at UCC’s Danny Lang Event Center, the in-person competition was one of the largest since 2019. Statewide math events were canceled in 2020 and 2021.

The mathletes arrived on campus wearing green UCC t-shirts. The competition kicked off with a welcome from college president Dr. Rachel Pokrandt, followed by a sixty-minute quiz, scavenger hunt, and lunch.

Students in the top twelve percent qualified across four category levels to compete at the statewide event.
