Oregon Governor Kate Brown ordered all flags at Oregon public institutions to be flown at half-staff until sunset, Sunday March 27th to honor the life and legacy of Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

Brown made the announcement late Wednesday afternoon saying, “Secretary of State Albright was a trailblazer and a beacon of hope, truth, and justice. While she will be deeply missed, her legacy will live on for generations to come.”

Oregon Senator Ron Wyden commented on Albright’s passing saying, “Madeleine Albright blazed a path for women in foreign policy here at home, and around the world. Her strong legacy of public service, advocating for human rights, and fierce support of women leaders will live on for generations to come.”

Albright was the first woman to serve as the United States Secretary of State when she held the office from 1997 to 2001 during the Clinton administration.

Albright immigrated to the U.S. from then-Czechoslovakia with her family in 1948.

Albright passed away Wednesday at the age of 84.
