Residents of Sutherlin are mourning the loss of a high school senior who passed away early Tuesday.

A Sutherlin Police report said shortly after 7:00 a.m. Umpqua Valley Ambulance and Sutherlin Fire responded to a residence regarding an 18-year old who was not waking up. Medical personnel worked for an hour to revive the male but eventually determined that he had passed.

Captain Kurt Sorenson said the male was identified as Juan Delgado. Sorenson said the cause of his death is unknown but an autopsy has been scheduled.

Sorenson said, “Juan’s death is tragic and a lot of people in our community are sad about his passing. Juan was a nice kid. He was well liked by adults and his peers. He was due to graduate from high school this June”. Sorenson said, “I knew Juan personally. He was thoughtful and kind and he had a good heart”.

Superintendent Terry Prestianni of the Sutherlin School District said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Juan Delgado as a member of our school community. As you can imagine, students and staff are taking his loss deeply in their hearts and this is a difficult time”. Prestianni said “Juan was a beloved person who most definitely had a positive impact on our school family and he will be sorely missed”.

Prestianni told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that grief counseling and safe rooms were set up at the high school on Tuesday with several staff members available to assist students. He said help will continue for as long as it is needed.
