FOUR CHAPLAINS LEGION OF HONOR SERVICE IS SATURDAY

February 18, 2022 10:30 a.m.

The 10th annual Four Chaplains Legion of Honor service will be Saturday in Roseburg.

Organizer Jim Little said the remembrance is held to honor four chaplains who gave up their life vests during the sinking of the US Army Transport Ship Dorchester in February of 1943, during World War II. It is also an opportunity to induct a number of people into the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor. This year there will be a special posthumous induction for a well-known veteran’s supporter and veteran advocate, Owen Dykema, Captain, USNR-Retired. Those being inducted have all been approved by the Four Chaplains Chapel Committee, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since 2016, 31 Douglas County citizens from all walks of life have been inducted into the Legion of Honor.

The ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the American Legion Post 16 at 406 Southeast Oak Street near downtown. Additional parking is available at the nearby food court. Call 672-4635 for more information.

Jim Little talked about the historical event and about this weekend’s remembrance on the Morning Conversation Friday on News Radio 1240 KQEN. That interview is a KQEN podcast at www.541radio.com
