Construction is beginning on the Oakland Bridge replacement project.

The bridge is on Old Highway 99, just north of the Oakland city limits. The new bridge will be built on a new alignment next to the existing structure. It will include two travel lanes for vehicles and shoulders for pedestrians.

Dan Latham of the Oregon Department of Transportation said the work will continue for two years. Latham said the old bridge will remain open to traffic until the new bridge is completed.

Most construction will take place outside the travel lanes. Motorists and pedestrians should watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed and delays will be brief.

Latham said for most of this month, prime contractor Farline Bridge Incorporated of Stayton, will focus on mobilizing equipment to the work zone. That includes removing trees and brush and relocating a driveway near the bridge.

The bridge will be closed for one weekend, probably in the summer of next year, for replacement of a sewer line. ODOT will provide notice prior to the closure, and detour routes will be posted.
