Two people were jailed following an alleged theft incident on Monday.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at 4:00 a.m. a deputy was parked along Highway 99 near Interstate 5 when he observed an SUV towing a Voss Construction enclosed trailer leave the freeway and travel south on Highway 99. The deputy thought that was odd given the time of night and that the trailer was being towed by a non-company vehicle.

The report said the deputy followed at a distance and contacted the company’s manager. That person said no employees would be working at that hour and that if it wasn’t a company truck pulling the trailer, it was likely stolen.

The deputy followed the vehicle all the way out to Rice Creek where he pulled it over. The driver claimed he was headed to a job site.

He and another man were taken into custody. 40-year old Shelby Yarbrough and 42-year old Thomas Berger were each charged with first-degree theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Both were held on $100,000 bail.

The company’s manager recovered the trailer and estimated the value of the tools inside to be $15,000. The SUV was impounded.
