OVER 26 PERCENT OF COVID-19 CASES ARE BREAKTHROUGH CASES

The Oregon Health Authority’s most recent update on COVID-19 breakthrough cases released on Thursday, showed that 26.4 percent of recent cases of COVID-19 in the state, were vaccine breakthrough cases.

OHA said 45,334 cases of COVID-19 were reported during the week of January 2nd to January 8th. Of those cases, 33,363, or 73.6 percent were unvaccinated people while the rest occurred in those already vaccinated.

The average age of the breakthrough cases during that period was 36. 45 breakthrough cases involved residents of care facilities, senior living communities or other congregate care settings. There were 985 cases in people aged 12 to 17.

To date, there have been 72,683 vaccine breakthrough cases in Oregon. The average age of all cases is 44. Breakthrough cases have been reported in all 36 counties.

OHA said cases of COVID-19 are far more common in unvaccinated people. The report shows that the rate of COVID-19 in unvaccinated people is more than 5 times higher than in vaccinated people.

To date, 3.5 percent of all vaccine breakthrough cases have been hospitalized and 1 percent have died. The average age of vaccinated people who have died is 81.
