AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY BEGINS THURSDAY NIGHT

January 11, 2022 1:30 p.m.

An Air Stagnation Advisory begins for much of southern Oregon on Thursday night.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said poor air quality is expected. Stagnant conditions will trap smoke and other air pollutants near the ground where people breathe.

The Advisory area includes central Douglas County, Josephine and Jackson counties and eastern Curry County.

Forecasters said air stagnation is likely to result in diminishing air quality with time, especially in and near areas with significant sources of air pollution. This will likely cause health issues for people with respiratory problems if precautions are not taken.

Forecasters said people with respiratory illnesses should follow their physician’s advice for dealing with diminished air quality. N95 masks are effective at filtering out the majority of harmful particulates.

State air quality agencies recommend that no outdoor burning occur and that residential wood burning devices be limited as much as possible.
