An effort to recall 2 members of the Winston-Dillard School Board continues, with the deadline to submit signatures, just a week away.

Board member Jasmine Geyer is the Chief Petitioner for the effort which seeks to recall Board Chair Brian West and Vice Chair Curt Stookey. Geyer told News Radio 1240 KQEN that she is taking the action because she believes that parents and families should be able to make their own medical decisions. Geyer said “Saying you believe in medical freedom but not using your position to vote for it when the community who voted for you wants you to is worse than not believing it in the first place”.

Geyer said she believes Winston residents are ready for a school board that is ready to “make extremely tough decisions in order for parents and families to maintain their basic rights to make medical decisions for their children during the school day”.

Geyer said last week members of a local citizens coalition and other community members gathered signatures at Brockway, Lookingglass and McGovern schools. She said she has seen a large push in signature gathering now that superintendents have been notified that the vaccinations are likely to be on the list in order to register for school in the next school year.

Douglas County Clerk Daniel Loomis said that 640 valid signatures per recall petition must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on December 22nd.  Loomis said his staff will then have 10 days to verify the signature sheets. If they are verified and sufficient, then the public official who is the subject of the recall will have 5 days to respond. If their response is to resign, there would be no recall election. However, if their response is an SEL Form 352 Statement of Justification, then a recall election for the district must be held within 35 days.
