Roseburg Police Chief Gary Klopfenstein and 4 other officers shopped for children’s school clothing as they took part in the Salvation Army’s Dress-a-Child Program on Saturday.

More than 50 volunteers participated in the event at Fred Meyer on Northwest Garden Valley Boulevard.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the volunteers were not joined by the schoolkids who benefit from the program. Instead each shopper was given a list of needs for the child they were shopping for.

A City of Roseburg release said the Salvation Army works with each school in the county to identify children who would best be helped by the program. The shopping is scheduled for fall rather than before the school year starts to give teachers time to assess who is in need, according to Salvation Army Captain Edith Dye-Mabie.

The annual program is supported by the Ford Family Foundation and the local Fred Meyer.

A group of volunteers also shopped for the children on Saturday November 6th. Another group will shop this coming Saturday. For more information, contact Captain Dye-Mabie at 541-248-2585.
