A transient was jailed after an elude incident on Sunday.

A report from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said at 10:40 a.m. a deputy ran a vehicle’s plate while it was parked at an adult shop in the 700 block of John Long Road, near Rice Hill. It returned stolen out of Coos County.

Deputies observed 39-year old Douglas Baker enter the vehicle. A vehicle pin tactic was applied during contact and a bump was given at the time the car showed signs that the driver was attempting to flee. The car drove onto the narrow sidewalk surrounding the building, striking another car and a pole to the building, before entering the parking lot.

The report said the sedan nearly struck a patrol unit before its exit. The vehicle headed north on Interstate 5 at speeds between 30 and 110 miles per hour before running out of gas near the south Cottage Gove exit. Baker initially refused to exit the vehicle but was eventually taken into custody without incident.

The report said it was determined later that the suspect had allegedly stolen a cell phone from Three Rivers Casino and had also allegedly stolen pornography from the adult shop.

Baker was charged with a felony count of attempting to elude, possession of a stolen vehicle, first-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, reckless endangering, hit and run-property, a misdemeanor count of unlawful possession of methamphetamine, driving while suspended and for third-degree theft. Bail was set at $182,500.
