DEVIL’S KNOB COMPLEX HAS MINIMAL FIRE GROWTH

September 21, 2021 10:30 a.m.

The Devil’s Knob Complex has had minimal growth and is now listed at 69,937 acres.

An update from the Pacific Northwest Team 2 said smoke from the interior area has been visible from the surrounding areas. Grasses, brush and trees have been critically dry for months and even after rainfall blanketed the area over the weekend, fuel moistures remain extremely low and are receptive to ignition. Crews were able to contain several spot fires north of the Smith Fire and Forest Road 2759 that were still holding heat after the rainstorm.

Firefighters are anticipating progressively warmer temperatures and lower relative humidity through the week, with some unseasonably hot and breezy conditions on Friday. This rise in temperature will slowly correspond with increased smoke over the fire areas as heat dries out the heavier fuels and they consume more readily.

Crews will continue fire suppression rehabilitation work around the fire perimeter. Multiple chippers are being used to chip the debris and branches cut during fire line construction on the southern perimeters of the Big Hamlin and Smith Fires. Mop up continues on the northwest portion of the Smith Fire.

The Big Hamlin Fire is now 100 percent contained while containment on the Smith Fire is still at 28 percent.
