An investigation is underway following an officer involved shooting in Roseburg on Thursday night.

Sergeant Daniel Allen of Roseburg Police said at about 8:00 p.m. officers responded to the 1300 block of Southeast Magnolia Street after it was reported that 39-year old John Kliestik was attempting to light his parent’s home on fire while they were inside the residence.

Allen said officers on the scene verified there were fires inside the residence and attempted to make contact with the occupants of the residence and make the scene safe. Officers were confronted by Kliestik, who allegedly presented an imminent threat to his parents and the officers. That resulted in one officer discharging their weapon, striking Kliestik in the leg.

Allen said officers were able to secure Kliestik, render aid, and extinguish the fires within the home. Roseburg Fire Department and ambulance services responded and provided further medical care to Kliestik. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Allen said the Douglas County Major Crimes Team was activated to investigate the officer involved shooting. The names of the officers are not being released at this time.

Detectives from Roseburg Police are conducting a separate criminal investigation into Kliestik’s actions leading up to the shooting.
