DCSO says Azalea residents died from homicidal violence

An investigation into the deaths of two Azalea residents in a trailer fire last week has turned into a homicide investigation for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

DCSO announced Wednesday that the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office has determined the deaths of 59-year-old Brian Edward Dean and 65-year-old Maureen Anne Mathabel was the result of homicidal violence.

The two victims were reportedly found deceased inside a trailer that caught fire on Friday, August 6 in the Meadow Wood RV Park in Azalea.

The Douglas County Major Crimes Team has been activated to assist in the investigation with DCSO. The Major Crimes Team includes officers from the Roseburg Police Department, Oregon State Police and the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.

Investigators urge anyone who may have photo, video or surveillance footage of the incident to share the evidence by submitting the items to an online public evidence portal.
