A Sutherlin man was cited for child neglect in the second-degree, following an incident on Wednesday.

A Roseburg Police report said at about 5:00 p.m. a witness found a juvenile child in a vehicle in the parking lot of Bi-Mart on Northwest Garden Valley. The report said the sedan was running and the witness believed the air conditioning was on, but stayed with the car for 15 to 20 minutes before the owner came out of the store.

The man told an officer that he was returning items to the store but kept the vehicle within his eyesight while doing so. The report said temperatures were around 100 degrees and the engine could have easily turned off and the father would not have known, causing substantial risk to his child.

The man was released after the citation was issued.
