Tax season is coming to a close with the deadline to file state and federal personal income tax returns coming on May 17th.

A release said the Oregon Department of Revenue estimates it will receive more than half a million tax returns between now and then.

At least 1.5 million Oregonians have already filed their state personal income tax returns. The department is expecting about 2.2 million returns this year.

Those who owe taxes must make their tax payments by the same due date. Some taxpayers are granted filing extensions, which means their returns are not due until October 15th. However, an extension to file is not an extension to pay. Interest on taxes due starts accumulating the day after the return is due.

Those making a payment separate from their return can go to: https://www.oregon.gov/dor/forms/Pages/default.aspx for a blank income tax voucher. To avoid penalties and interest, payments must be postmarked by May 17th.
