Governor Kate Brown has commented on the death of a former state Republican lawmaker.

On Twitter Thursday Brown said, “I was saddened to hear of the passing of former Representative Bill Markham this week. He was someone who was a friend to all, and a leader who built bridges and could work with anyone. I’ll always remember the way he made me feel welcome as a newcomer to the legislature. A World War II veteran, Bill devoted his life to serving his state and country. He will be missed”.

Markham, who represented parts of Douglas County for 14 terms in the Oregon State House of Representatives, died on Monday at age 98.
