What appears to be a fatal medical event led to an accident Friday morning in Sutherlin.

Captain Kurt Sorenson of the Sutherlin Police said at about 7:40 a.m. a westbound vehicle on West Central began to drift as it crossed the intersection with West Hawthorne. Sorenson said the vehicle left the roadway and ran into a fence. The wheels continued to spin, putting up a cloud of smoke.

Sorenson said Sutherlin Fire responded and had to break the windows out of the vehicle in order to be able to reach in and shut the engine off. Emergency responders performed CPR on the driver, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
