One man was jailed and one man was hospitalized following an early morning wreck near Winston on Saturday.

A report from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said just before 5:30 a.m. a deputy received information that a man had been taken to CHI Mercy Medical Center following a rollover accident in the 7,000 block of Rice Creek Road. The report said the victim had serious injuries while the driver of the vehicle was in the lobby of the hospital.

The report said the driver was contacted and found to be asleep in a chair. He allegedly smelled of alcohol with eyes that were bloodshot and watery. The man reportedly refused to speak with the deputy. An officer stood by him, while a deputy talked to witnesses.

A witness said a group of 50-60 people were at a bonfire and several were drinking. The witness claimed the driver had been drinking throughout the night and then left with the victim. The witness said as the driver took off in his truck, he started drifting and crashed about 100 yards away from the bonfire. The victim was removed from the vehicle and rushed to the hospital.

27-year old Nicholis Shaffer of Roseburg was taken into custody. Charges included second-degree assault, reckless driving, reckless endangering, DUII-alcohol, and for a warrant. After arraignment, bail was set at $25,000.

The victim, a 31-year old Winston man, was later transferred to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield. He was listed in fair condition, by a hospital spokesperson.
