Firefighters from multiple agencies responded to a natural cover fire Wednesday afternoon, near the Burnt Mountain Access Road, approximately 12 miles west of Winston.

Kyle Reed of the Douglas Forest Protective Association said crews arrived on the scene at about 12:15 p.m. and reported a slow-moving fire that was burning in heavy vegetation. Reed said one helicopter was used to slow the spread of the fire while ground resources worked their way around the blaze.

Reed said shortly after 1:00 p.m. firefighters reported that the Burnt Mountain Fire had been stopped at a half acre of wildland fuels. Crews are remaining on the scene for the rest of the day, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the cause of the fire may be vehicle related.

In addition to DFPA, equipment and personnel from the Tenmile Rural Fire Department, Lookingglass Rural Fire Department, Winston-Dillard Fire Department and the Coos Forest Protective Association, all responded to the blaze.  Fire danger remains extreme on all DFPA lands.
