The Roseburg Public Library is inviting the community to be part of a Facebook Live streaming event: “Nevertheless, They Persisted: The Woman Suffrage Movement & the Struggle for Voting Rights”, on September 17th.
Library Director Kris Wiley said the speaker will be Eliza Canty-Jones of the Oregon Historical Society. Along with the library, the sponsors of the event are the Douglas Education Service District and the League of Women Voters of Umpqua Valley.
Wiley said 2020 marks two important anniversaries in the nation’s voting-rights history: the sesquicentennial of the Fifteenth Amendment and the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment. Wiley said with those additions, the U.S. Constitution vastly expanded full citizenship rights across the nation. Canty-Jones will deliver a lecture and discuss Oregon’s role in the historical and ongoing fight for equal access to the ballot. During the live stream she will also answer questions from the audience.
The event will run from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Call the Roseburg Public Library for more information.
