The Coos Forest Protective Association responded to a fire just east of Scottsburg at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

Jef Chase of CFPA said the fire was started due to the mechanical failure of a trailer being towed. Chase said the fire was burning in steep terrain along Highway 38 and was pushed by strong winds. CFPA brought in engines, hand crews, and multiple aircraft to stop the fire.

Chase said crews from rural fire departments in Scottsburg, Elkton, Reedsport and Gardiner also responded to assist with fire suppression efforts.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire at 16 acres. Crews remained on the scene overnight securing fire lines and mopping up hot spots.
