A fire detection camera on Mount Scott, operated by the Douglas Forest Protective Association, located a column of smoke Tuesday evening in the Hinkle Creek area, approximately 11 miles northeast of Sutherlin.

Kyle Reed of DFPA said firefighters arrived on the scene of the Hinkle Creek Fire around 6:30 p.m. They reported a quarter acre fire burning through a stand of young trees. Reed said three helicopters were used to keep the fire in check while ground resources worked to install hose lays and construct containment lines around the perimeter of the blaze.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. the Hinkle Creek incident commander reported that the forward spread of the fire had been stopped.

Reed said the camera on Mount Scott is one of 13 fire detection cameras located within the Douglas District, that is monitored by DFPA. In addition, DFPA monitors an additional 15 detection cameras located throughout western Oregon on lands protected by the Coos Forest Protective Association and the Oregon Department of Forestry.

The Hinkle Creek Fire burned one third of an acre. Firefighters remained on the scene until 11:00 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
