Forest fire fighters have contained a new fire in the Umpqua National Forest.

Mark Turney of the Forest Service said crews located the Wits End Fire on Tuesday in the Cinnamon Butte area and began suppression work utilizing 2 engines, a Type 2 helicopter and Diamond Lake Crew 3. Turney said this is thought to be the first “hold-over fire” from the lightning event that impacted the Diamond Lake area on July 29th.

Firefighters worked into the early evening, reporting containment at around 8:15 p.m. Crew 3 and one engine remained on the ground Tuesday night and reengaged the fire early Wednesday morning. Turney said crews will reinforce fire lines and begin mop-up of any remaining heat.

Potential lightning events are possible on the Umpqua National Forest later this week.

Fire danger remains high with Public Use Restriction 1 still in effect.
