A transient was jailed for third degree counts of robbery and theft following an incident in Myrtle Creek on Saturday afternoon.
Chief Jonathan Brewster of Myrtle Creek Police said at approximately 12:35 p.m. 38-year old Michael Sapser reportedly entered the AG Market on North Main Street. Brewster said the suspect was observed by a store employee placing alcoholic beverages inside his backpack. Brewster said as Sapser tried to exit the store, the employee confronted him regarding the theft. The report said the employee grabbed the man’s bag but the Sapser pushed him away. The two had a brief struggle, but Sapser was able to leave the store.
Brewster said a citizen who observed the incident later saw the suspect changing his clothing near Millsite Park and reported that to Douglas County Communications. He also directed a Myrtle Creek officer to where the suspect was. Sapser was taken into custody without further incident.
The report said the officer located the stolen alcoholic beverages. A count of harassment was also part of the charges. Bail was set at $53,750.
The report said the store employee sustained a minor injury to his hand during the struggle, but declined medical attention.
