A Riddle teacher has been named Regional Teacher of the Year for the Douglas Education Service District region, by the Oregon Department of Education in partnership with the Oregon Lottery.
Beverly Scott teaches science at Riddle Junior and Senior High School. Scott wins a $500 cash prize and is in the running for Oregon’s 2021 Teacher of the Year. That honor will be announced this fall.
Scott has 12 years in the education field and teaches biology, general science, and anatomy. She also teaches dual-credit Umpqua Community College CTE allied health courses. In addition, she serves as yearbook advisor, was a Fund for Teachers Fellow in 2019 and is a member of the Douglas County Regional Educator Network Coordinating Body.
School Principal William Starkweather said “whenever Ms. Scott notices a roadblock for her students, she becomes an advocate for change”.
Riddle School District Superintendent Dave Gianotti said Scott has taken students who have low skills and moved them back to grade level. He said not only does she understand what students need “she knows how to move them forward”.
Regional Teachers of the year are nominated by students, colleagues, administrators, friends or family members and are selected by a diverse panel of representatives.
The person selected as 2021 Oregon Teacher of the Year will receive a $5,000 cash prize with a matching $5,000 going to their school. They will serve as a spokesperson and representative for all Oregon teachers.
