The Oregon Farm Bureau is reacting to temporary rules for agricultural employers recently announced by the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The Farm Bureau release said the new rules only give 11 days-notice to make significant changes to farm infrastructure and practices. It said the group is concerned that certain rules require changes in agricultural workplaces that are not attainable by farm and ranch families as there are “considerable supply chain issues” that make complying with these rules impossible.
The release said the rules also reduce the amount of available housing for farm employees, including in rural areas where there are no viable alternative lodging options available. It said many farms will not survive the “cumulative weight of these unattainable rules” which the Farm Bureau believes “are more burdensome than any set for other sectors of Oregon’s economy”.
The new rules address areas like field sanitation and transportation as well.
